Wanna Join Band?!  Purchasing an Instrument?

Picture
There are many places to purchase a musical instrument including private individuals, ebay, craig's list, pawn shops, and music stores. Many times these stores will offer what seems like very inexpensive instruments.  With these instruments, there is no after-sale support, no repair service, or a direct working relationship with the manufacturer.  Typically, purchasing an instrument from outside a music based company means the instrument will be of low quality, which is usually a brand that Quinlan and Fabish Music Company will not repair.  Many times, purchasing low quality instruments produces frustrated students and higher long-term costs for parents.  We recommend renting or purchasing an instrument from a store that specializes in school music service.  North Newton chooses to work with Quinlan and Fabish Music Company.

When looking to purchase an instrument, keep a few things in mind:
  • Play the instrument before you purchase it!

You never can be sure of the quality of the instrument until it is inspected and "test driven" before hand.

  • Look to purchase a name brand instrument.

Do not waste time purchasing an off brand instrument.  Often, non-brand name instrument manufacturers do not make parts available for repair companies.

  • Watch out for internet auction sites.

More times than not, instruments purchased here will need at least minor repair service.  The cost or repair could easily out way the actual price.  Music stores may not have the ability to repair off brand instruments.

  • Consider value of service.

instrument repair is an inevitable fact.  Non-brand name instruments might not be available for repair.  Almost all school music stores offer maintenance repair plans to go with the purchase of name brand instruments.  Every instrument will need repair service at a point time in its musical career.

  • Consider asking your band director for advice.

I am always willing and available to help look at an instrument and give advice as to whether it is worth purchasing.  Quinlan and Fabish is a reputable music company that will sell and repair quality musical instruments. Take a look at this video from Q and F about online rental of instruments here!   If you have any questions about purchasing an instrument, feel free to contact me at any time.

Sincerely,

Craig Redlin
